Advantages of underfloor heating system

Efficiency

Undoubtedly, both plumbing and electrical systems are much more efficient than traditional radiators. Radiators usually require heat of around 65-75°C, so underfloor heating only needs to heat up to around 29°C, depending on the type of floor used.

Radiators only warm their surroundings first, making rooms prone to cold spots. Underfloor heating heats the entire floor surface – so there are no cold spots.

Easy to run

In general, underfloor heating requires very little maintenance and most systems come with a lifetime warranty.

Plus, almost every system you order comes with some sort of smart thermostat – so you decide when the heating comes on and off. Plus, most smart thermostat brands have apps for your iPhone or Android device, so you can control your heating even when you’re away from home.

Turn on the heat when you get home from work!

Works with all types of flooring

Regardless of the type of floor in your home, be it cement, laminate, wood, tile or stone – you can be sure that the underfloor heating system you choose will work with it.

Safety and comfort

Heat from underfloor heating systems is much easier and more evenly distributed than traditional radiators – the air is fresher and richer in oxygen, plus you don’t have to worry about children getting hurt in a hot radiator.

Easy installation

Installing water systems can be easy if part of a renovation while installing some electrical systems, depending on the size of the room, it can be done as a DIY project. Remember to always seek our advice and ensure you speak to a fully qualified plumber or electrician before doing anything.

Disadvantages of underfloor heating:

Installation costs

The cost will vary depending on the system you ultimately decide to go for, plus you’ll need to factor in the hourly costs of a plumber or electrician. As a general rule, water systems are 2-3 times more expensive than electrical installations and are usually done as part of a total renovation or retrofit.

Installation time

Typically, electrical installation may take some time due to the self-aligning compound that is usually required. It must be completely dry before placing the floor covering. Water-based underfloor heating systems take longer, but since it’s usually part of a larger renovation, it’s not a big deal.

Floor height problem

Any underfloor heating system usually means that the height of your floor will increase by a few centimeters. Plus, any insulation boards you decide to leave out will also help increase the size of the floor. Just something to keep in mind.

Is it worth it at all?

Undoubtedly, yes! You get a home with even heat and no radiator cold spots. Long term – you’ll save on your heating bills as underfloor heating is 25% more efficient than traditional radiators.
